Geography - our local area

Date: 23rd Nov 2018 @ 7:22pm

Today we have finished our topic Our local area. The children in year 3 have shown real passion for fieldwork and map skills, using not only Ordnance Survey maps but also more modern maps like Google maps and Google Earth.

Using maps and reading them is an important life skill and a part of basic education that the children should take  with them as they progress throughout the key stages and further on in life, and Year 3 definitely have had a great start. We investigated Cronton in the wider context of regions, boroughs and counties and we looked at the map to locate the nearest cities, rivers and motorways.

Finally, we tried to sketch our own map, using the symbols we learnt to give directions from our school to Pex Hill and some of us even attempted to describe their way from home to school, using  Google maps to find out Street names and numbers of exits on the roundabouts.

All of our hard work links to our  English genre topic with us learning about information texts and currently writing our own leaflet about Cronton. This week has been hard as we all tried to step up to the challenge of using cursive joint handwriting and making sure our work looks presentable and is something we have 100% and can be proud of. ๐Ÿ‘Œ
