Our Phonics and Reading Schemes

Our Phonics Scheme

We follow Letters and Sounds.  This is a phonics resource published by the Department for Education and Skills in 2007. It aims to build children's speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills.

Our Reading Schemes

In KS1 we follow Oxford Reading Tree,  Alphakids, Collins Big Cats and PM Readers.  These schemes give the children the opportunity to read a mixture of fiction and non-fiction books that help them to develop their fluency, phonic skills and comprehension skills.  They are colour banded in the following way according to level of difficulty: light pink, dark pink, red, yellow, blue, green, orange, turquoise, purple, gold, white and lime.  When reading with your child please note that we use these bands wheh working through the scheme, not the original printed level number.

Children in KS2 follow the Accelerated Reader programme.  This is a computerized program that tests reading comprehension. The children select books on their reading level, read independently, and take an independent comprehension test on the computer.  Attached is a parental guide to Accelerated Reading.  Please note the children can only access the computer programme from school computers.  Some children in Year 2 are ready to start the Accelerate Reader programme near the end of the year.

We feel that reading for pleasure is very important as well.  There are books and comics available in the hall for the children to read in the mornings when they come in to school before going to class.  Each class has their own class library and the children have a time-tabled visit to the school library each week.  Children are able to access the school library on a rota basis at lunch time and there are two library sheds in the playground for used during break and lunch time.
